What exactly is a keto diet?
The ketogenic, or keto, diet is a really popular weight loss solution.
The program itself involves eating a diet that is low in carbohydrates and high in fat.
The fat will mainly come from healthy and natural sources, such as nuts, seeds, butter, and coconut oil.
There is also a protein amount of approx 30% that makes up the rest of the plan. The protein comes from lean meats or even fatty bacon.
The main part of the keto diet is to eat a low amount of carbs. In fact, less than 50 grams of carbs each day is the recommendation.
How does the keto diet work?
Well, in normal circumstances, the human body will take sugar or glucose from carbs and use it as fuel. But when you starve your body of this fuel source, it will lose all of the glucose it normally uses.
That’s when it begins to use your stored fat instead. When this happens, it’s called being in a ketosis state. A fatty acid is created that is referred to as ketones and your body will use these ketones for the fuel it needs.
Does keto work for diabetics?
There have been lots of studies that have revealed people who have Type 2 diabetes have had positive effects when on a keto diet. They have managed to lose weight and keep their blood sugar levels totally in control.
The research for Type 1 diabetics isn’t too in-depth but it has been shown to lower the A1c levels.
Is keto SAFE for diabetics?
There have been lots of research and tons of testimonials to suggest that people with Type 2 diabetes can safely use keto diets to lose weight, without it affecting their diabetes.
But obviously, you need to consult your doctor before you make any final decisions and get their professional opinion.
